In the year 1280 AD, the gate to the outer courtyard or Buitenhof served as the main entrance to the castle of the Counts of Holland, known as the Binnenhof today. In 1428, this ‘Front Gate to the Court’ also became a prison. In the dark and cold gaols, defaulters and suspected criminals awaited their trials. Famous patriots such as Cornelis de Witt and Dirk Volckertszoon Coornhert were incarcerated here. The Prison Gate has been a museum since 1882 and can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday.

The orginal can ofcourse be found in the Mauritshuis, just like the Anatomical lesson of Rembrandt and Het puttertje van Fabritius. In an 18th century mansion Museum Bredius displays the private collection of the renowned art historian Dr. Abraham Bredius (1855-1946). In addition to paintings by Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Aert van der Neer, Adriaen van Ostade, Meindert Hobbema, and many other big and small artists of the Golden Age, the collection contains beautiful furniture, porcelain, silver and crystal.

Pulchri Studio was founded in 1847 as a collective of artists and has a rich history. Since 1898 the monumental building Lange Voorhout 15 has been home to Pulchri. The building functions among other things as a gallery consisting of seven exhibition spaces. Every month there are new exhibitions, usually accompanied by festive openings. Aside from exhibitions there are for example often lectures and concerts at Pulchri. Entrance to the gallery is free of charge.

Pulchri is open from Tuesday till Sunday from 12.00-17.00 hrs. Artists and art-loving members meet at Pulchri’s society (Clubhouse), which is a restaurant inside the Pulchri building. In the evening the club is exclusively for members, but from 11.00 to 18.00 pm anyone is welcome to enjoy a drink or snack. We also have a terrace in our “secret” garden. The galleries of Pulchri can also be rented for events such as receptions, parties and meetings.
